SOUTH FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL PRESS CLUB SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
PURPOSE OF THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM To encourage worthy candidates to study journalism and broadcasting by providing financial aid for their college work. Applicants must be residents of Florida , from Boca Raton south.
PROCEDURE: On or before TBA -- The Scholarship Chair will communicate with current recipients who wish to continue their studies and with Miami-Dade County high schools concerning fall scholarships.
After saving and printing out the following application form, students should mail their completed application package to Scholarship Chair Dr. M.J. McLaughlin, at the above address by TBA, to be considered for Fall 2009 scholarships. Applicants should NOT send video or audiotapes but should include an e-mail address. The winners will be informed about results both by e-mail and by phone.
CAREER AND COLLEGE PROGRAM: To be eligible, applicants must intend a career in print journalism and/or broadcasting. Scholarship winners should register for at least 12 credit hours each college semester. While the South Florida International Press Club encourages them to take the communications courses necessary for their professional advancement, it also urges them to take a broad liberal arts course of study that includes history, literature, geography, and foreign languages. Also recommended: a college semester or a year in a study abroad program.
COMPLETING THE APPLICATION: In addition to filling in the necessary information on the two pages of forms, applicants should submit an essay of 400 to 500 words (typed and double spaced) concerning their objectives. They should also provide published or unpublished samples showing their creativity and explain in writing their need for financial assistance.
EVALUATION OF APPLICATIONS: A scholarship committee, including the chair and other person(s) will evaluate the applications.
CRITERIA USED IN EVALUATIONS: The scholarship committee will take into account these principal factors: (1) TALENT and ABILITY, (2) PERSONAL MOTIVATION and CAREER AIMS and (3) NEED for assistance. U.S. citizenship is required.
